Gramado is a city marked by German, Italian and Portuguese colonisations, whose cultural features are presented in the hospitality, beauty, quality of life and development that transformed the town built around 1875 into the welcoming city of nowadays. It is located 120 km from the capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre.
With temperate climate, typical architecture and cultural expressions, Gramado has tourism and scientific and cultural events as the basis of its economy. Gramado and Canela are two twin cities of German, Italian and Portuguese origin, nestled in a dense forest in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with a distance of 9.2 km from each other. They have multiple options for walks between those created by man and nature, very good cuisine, friendly and helpful people, and of great beauty just 120 km from Porto Alegre.
You don’t need to be in a Conference to realize the charms and beauties of the cities of Gramado and Canela in Rio Grande do Sul. A place where araucarias predominate, trees that can be up to 35 meters high and hydrangeas, flowers that are grouped together as bouquets, all united in a heap of large leaves with a vivid green, that are in all the corners of the Serra Gaúcha.
As the city preserves the tourist focus, the education of the people is a notable point in this city that seems to be made by dollhouses. It has a sophisticated shopping centre, with wonderful food, with almost 200 restaurants, not to mention the countless artisanal chocolate stores.
Leaving the centre and touring the other cities of the Serra Gaúcha, you can visit wineries that produce wines with international recognition and awards, in addition to tasting divine cheeses that are not found in a big city, but in small wooden shops run by families with traits Italian and typical gaúcho accent.
In Canela, one of the must-visit spots is Parque do Caracol, where the Cascata do Caracol is located, a 131-meter waterfall. One of the attractions of the park, in addition to a 927-step trail to the base of the waterfall, and the viewpoint at the top of the park, above the crown of the araucaria trees, which has a 360º view of the park and a view of the waterfall.
Another park that has guaranteed fun is the Alpen Park, which has attractions such as the sledge that looks like a roller coaster, that runs 900 meters in the middle of trees and waterfalls, in addition to Tree climbing, the Tyrolean with 190 meters long and 50 meters high.
Gramado has several types of museums, such as the Hollywood Dream Cars, Harley Motor Show, Dreamland Wax Museum, Supercars, Perfume Museum, Stone Museum, Fashion Museum and the Film Festival Museum. In addition to the Steam World and the Mini World, which must be mandatory stops to visit.
It is nothing new for anyone that Gramado and Canela are a reference in hospitality, in addition to being two of the most beautiful cities in the Serra Gaúcha. The most sought after tourist destinations in Brazil are famous for being part of the main wine region of the country, for their different gastronomy and for the architecture inspired by classic European constructions. But what a lot of people don’t know is that both destinations have surprising curiosities about their history, culture and sights!
• Origin of names
Rumors say that the name Gramado was given by the tropeiros (those who led a herd, usually horses or cattle) of Serra Gaúcha. When transporting herds of cattle from one region to another, they would occasionally pass through an immense lawn (Gramado in Portuguese), where today is the city, and stop to rest. The region earned the affectionate nickname of Gramado.
The original name of the city of Canela appeared for a similar reason, also due to the tropeiros. In the region where João Correia Square is today there was a large cinnamon tree, a tree that served as a meeting point for the drovers who passed through the region. The tree was commonly called “Canela”.
• Different colonisers
Three different peoples colonised the region of Gramado and Canela: Germans, Portuguese and Italians. This mixture resulted in a diverse culture, with many peculiarities of customs and a delicious gastronomic heritage. In addition, Canela in particular also had influences from Syrian-Lebanese colonies that settled in the region. The cultural wealth acquired with this unusual mixture of knowledge is something worth knowing in depth by spending more time there.
• Lago Negro
In 1942, a big fire hit the Bier family’s property in Gramado. With the help of local residents, the land where the house once stood gave way to Lake Leopoldo Rosenfeldt, known today as Lago Negro (Black Lake). This name refers to the flora around the lake, made up of trees imported directly from the German Black Forest. The intention was to give the place a typically European bucolic look.
• Conduct in urban traffic
Even with the absence of traffic lights, the urban traffic in Gramado and Canela works perfectly, and it is customary for drivers to stop at the pedestrian crossing. This conduct widely adopted by the population and visitors gives both cities a good reputation for safety and respect for pedestrians.
• Cascata do Caracol
Cascata do Caracol (snail waterfall) is one of the most visited tourist spots in Canela. The 131m waterfall took its name from the river which, seen from above, reveals a shape that resembles a snail. Many people visit the waterfall via the Cable Cars, which have a great structure, security and 100% accessibility, but what many tourists are unaware of is that there is another access entrance through the State Park, which has trails that lead to the beginning of the waterfall, where the water starts to fall. We advise anyone who wants to venture through this alternative entrance to find out about opening times beforehand and check the trail’s maintenance conditions.
